i wish i had been there
the cure – lovecats - september, 1983.

my third one with those loveable hamster-haired herberts, of a further god knows how many, because i literally lost count. you do. anyway, i'll leave others to work that out. i have seriously heard or read estimates from between twenty to four hundred videos that i did with the cure. read the internet and you'll see some wacky theories about the cosmos at large and things pope. mostly about [the crow 2] you'll read monstrous stuff. ha! wacky vid'jo to shoot, this - a through-the-nighter, up in no. 1 england's lane, belsize park, london, as far as i recall. perhaps a blue plaque one day to recognise this london fact? i imagine foreign people walk past a lot, taking photos, following a person with a raised brolly, then doing the bob smith lovecats' jaunty dance. bet the neighbours got fed up with this song being belted out, mos' the night, for smithy to “move like cagey tigers," bless his cotton underpants. i myself was just back from la-la and the neil young [wonderin'] video shebang, and jet-lagged, and used the same half-speed effect as the wonderin' video, where robert sits at the base of the stairs with the kitten. catch the frames where the little blighter rips out at bob's fingers! for some reason, smithy ended up wearing my [red, carnaby street shirt], [like neil did]. rock musicians want the shirt off your very back. i have a theory - that vid'jos when appropriate ought to create a party atmosphere where the fanz, homo fanus, should see it and say “i wish i had been there." in the tim pope canon lovecats captures this [ethos] as does [friday i’m in love]. more recently, i'd say [this], of more recent vintage, does too. [see melody maker article about lovecats.] [smash hits article.] [see more evidence of the red, black-spotted shirt worn by pope.]
