people sent me their socks after

the cure – inbetween days – july, 1985.

...invariably, the buggers wanted me to shoot three days after their asking. the usual kick bollock and scramble, and the meeting with smithy; both of us pretending we knew what the other one meant [for what we were intending to shoot.] then into a huddle with production designer alex mcdowell somewhere off neal’s yard covent garden london and the camera in a swinging shopping basket theorem was born above a humble shoppe selling nuts and healthy foodstuffs and yeast extracts. but of course, mais oui... the dancing socks. ah, yes, 'the garment for the foot and lower part of the leg, typically knitted from wool, cotton, or nylon'. pointing to his own alex suggested to me that we animate some socks to create “abstract colours." 'abstract colours' my foot! 'abstraction' clearly did not get through to our animator rory fellows. robert came in to the edit and said: "but they look like socks, pap." and i had to agree as much as it peaved me to do so. anyway, the socks became legendary amongst cure fans who would often ask me in many tongues at cure concerts and stuff what was their meaning. [and they still do ask me, to this day, twenty-one years later. someone asked me on a 137 bus but t'other day!] they even appeared on cure backstage passes, posters and t-shirts and other merchandising, like mugs, bars of soap, and, even, i'm told, condoms. people sent me their socks after. handy at christmases, though... [sounds sock article.] [two swingers - photo.] [how it was done photo.] [uk's no. 1 article at inbetween days shoot.]
