videos:
three times a week

the cure – close to me – august, 1985.

"tim pope who made the wardrobe video," my epitaph will doubtless say. people ask me three times a week if i did this video. for some reason, it really seems to prick peoples' pincushions, to capture and hold hostage imaginations. i ought to be glad that people remember me for something, even if it was 1985. [the eighties!] i remember when we were filming, the wardrobe wobbled in the nothingness of the studio space, filled with cure members. the camera operator was in the wardrobe with the band and it literally was as small to work in as it looks. poor lol tolhurst got his curly mop caught in the film magazine where the spindles turned. there was a terrible -zrrrrrr- noise as the camera tried to eat him up and that smell of burning hair. we should release a “scratch and sniff” version to give the viewer their most authentic experience. because my overriding memories are those of smell. the catering at lunch had been a spicy curry, and the cure’s collective inner workings had not taken kindly to this howitzer pounding. it resulted in a bouquet of odours inside that wardrobe that not even the hardest cure aficionados would enjoy. this odour remains with me to this day and is why, generally, i avoid screening this video. any rumours that robert smith may or may not have started about my urinating in the water, during the sinking sequence, are purely fictitious, and i humbly suggest are the product of a diseased mind.
