the cure - boys don't cry - march, 1986.

these little kids were amazing - absolutely amazing. i'd shot the backgrounds, see, with smithy cavorting about, etc., in front of the suspended rubber gloves, and we gave them a v.h.s. of the result. whether or not they all had incredibly strict parents i don't know but when a week later they all came back for the shoot their movements were perfectly in synch. with the real cure's shadows behind 'em. it was spooky. especially amazing because i know we did the background behind them using an antiquated process called front projection - like a lot of the older stuff on this site you have to remember post-production processes in fur-lined soho suites did not yet exist - and with front projection, because of how it worked, one was not able to see the background image at the time of filming. or if you did it was only a very, very vague shadow of the image. you simply had to trust. then when you got the film back you saw what you'd actually been filming. how quaint. anyway, you can now see the result as i saw it, the day the film came back from mr. kodak.
